Self-Care & Relationships

Updated: May 4, 2021

I absolutely love this topic more than anything. Self-care is the utmost importance when it comes to living your life to the fullest. My main struggle is remembering to relax and recharge. I would like to consider myself an Extroverted Introvert. At first I had no idea what this meant, but after diving deeper into more books on self-discovery I resonated almost too well with every idea that this concept consisted of. After living in New York, I became much more self-aware of myself. I slowly started to realize how much my energy levels are closely tied to my environment. I couldn't help but notice how drained or energized I felt depending on what type of environment or situation I put myself in. In addition to environmental surroundings, Extroverted Introverts find people to be both intriguing, yet exhausting. I absolutely love meeting new people and hearing their life stories, which is why I found Costa Rica to be such a breath of fresh air to be able to connect with like-minded individuals. However, after all that socializing, it is 100% necessary for me to basically disappear and recharge my own energy. I was never able to do this in the past because I wasn’t happy with the person I was. Nowadays, I absolutely love my alone time! I crave my alone time with a healthy balance between social life and connection with other people who match my energy.

This leads into another characteristic of Extroverted Introverts, which is realizing that certain people and interactions drain you, while others recharge you. It took me awhile to be able to navigate that one because it is hard to tell those people who you drain your energy until after the fact. I am so thankful for those who truly just make me feel overall better after spending time with them. Cherish your friends and family who bring out the best version of you because they are able to match your energy. You are then able to thrive together and life each other up at the same time! Extroverted Introverts also tend to crave deeper, more authentic connection. It has only been within the last few years that I realized I truly craved deeper connections with the people I surround myself with. One of my current challenges is making sure I put self-care as a priority. I have a tendency to overexert myself and sacrifice my own happiness to make sure others aren't disappointed. There is a saying that you have to make sure your cup is filled before you can help others, which I feel is the perfect description of what we all go through. Why end up feeling left drained and depleted? Make yourself a priority. Self-care practices such as healing meditations, moving your body, and a simple routine will put you right back on track of putting yourself first. It was such an “aha” moment for me that as soon as I leveled up my self-care, I began to realize how much less I cared about what isn’t meant for me. One thing I never thought would bring me such joy is my dedicated “me” time. It is my way of connecting back to myself. Over the last few months of traveling and non- stop socializing, I realized how important that time is.

All of these self-care practices tie into the topic of Relationships because it forces you to look at who you are spending your time with. Who in your life lifts your spirit? Those are the friends and family you want to make an effort to spend time with. Surround yourself with people who uplift and motivate you to be your best self. We may all live in the same world, but definitely do not all live in the same frequency. Find your people that resonate with you. Trust the vibes you get and remember that energy never lies. I manifested that I wanted to be around good energy, connect with like-minded people, learn new ways of life, and grow into the best version of myself (which is still a work in progress), but that is exactly the path the Universe has provided for me. Trust me, if I can do this work and was able to get myself out of feeling stuck, dealing with depression, and relying on substances to be happy, you can too!
